Detailed information on official CPD requirements can be found on the GDC website. See below for a breakdown of the most important elements:
CPD activities can be anything that will assist in an individual's professional development. This may include study, training, courses, seminars/lectures, reading and other activities.
CPD activities are measured in hours and should be recorded in cycles of five-years. The amount of hours required within each five-year cycle differs for dentists and dental care professionals. Please see requirements below:
250 hours of CPD - 75 hours verifiable CPD
150 hours of CPD - 50 hours of verifiable CPD
Verifiable CPD activities must meet the following criteria:
- concise educational aims and objectives;
- clear anticipated outcomes; and
- quality controls (i.e. you should be given the opportunity to give feedback); and
- documentary proof of activities (preferably a CPD certificate) is also required and should contain details of the activity and the amount of CPD hours spent on it.
General CPD - activities which will help you to develop professionally but do not meet the above criteria - should be recorded alongside all verifiable CPD activities. Remember that only some of your overall CPD hours need to be verifiable.
