As well as a legal and professional requirement, CPD activities are vital to all dental professionals in ensuring that, as individuals and as a profession, we stay up to date with best practice and performance at the highest possible level.  This also means that we can provide patients with treatment that reflects a commitment to excellence.

The Dental Channel is committed to helping all members of the dental team to get the most out of CPD by providing expert advice and information at great value for money that doesn't interfere with professional commitments.  We hope you will find our courses interesting and engaging tools for your educational and training needs.

Detailed information on official CPD requirements can be found on the GDC website. See below for a breakdown of the most important elements:

CPD activities can be anything that will assist in an individual's professional development.  This may include study, training, courses, seminars/lectures, reading and other activities.

CPD activities are measured in hours and should be recorded in cycles of five-years.  The amount of hours required within each five-year cycle differs for dentists and dental care professionals.  Please see requirements below:

Dentists
250 hours of CPD - 75 hours verifiable CPD

DCPs
150 hours of CPD - 50 hours of verifiable CPD

Verifiable CPD activities must meet the following criteria:

  1. Sample_Cert_200px concise educational aims and objectives;
  2. clear anticipated outcomes; and
  3. quality controls (i.e. you should be given the opportunity to give feedback); and
  4. documentary proof of activities (preferably a CPD certificate) is also required and should contain details of the activity and the amount of CPD hours spent on it.

General CPD - activities which will help you to develop professionally but do not meet the above criteria - should be recorded alongside all verifiable CPD activities.  Remember that only some of your overall CPD hours need to be verifiable.
