This course is comprised of two presentations given to dentists, though the content is also relevant to other dental care professionals. About the presenter
Dr Dickinson teaches sedation, basic life support (BLS) and medical emergencies in dentistry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at Guy’s (for BDS & MFDS) and to other postgraduate groups, such as community dental services and general practitioners.
He is involved in BLS and medical emergency teaching for the distance learning MClinDent in prosthodontics at King’s College London and runs three all day practical medical emergency courses per year for the London Deanery. He is an examiner for the NEBDN dental sedation nursing post-certification exam and sits on the DSN committee. Dr Dickinson’s interests lie in all areas of Sedation and Special Care Dentistry with special interests in oral health care for patients with Epidermolysis Bullosa, cardiac conditions and gagging problems.
Learning aims and objectives
Medical Emergencies Parts 1 and 2:
To discuss and describe the aetiology, diagnosis and management of the main medical emergencies of importance to dentists, namely:
- Current regulations
- Faints
- Acute hypoglycaemia
- Acute asthma attacks
- Acute angina and myocardial infarction
- Adrenocortical insufficiency (Addisonian crisis)
- Acute allergy and anaphylaxis
- Epileptic fits
- To describe the required equipment, drugs and practical training required to deal with such events

In this session Dr Dickinson introduces the subject, discusses the legal and ethical changes in recent years, and the management of faints, acute asthma and acute hypoglycaemia.
Contents
The course comprises 2 on-demand presentations; Medical Emergencies Parts 1 & 2. Each course comprises the following
- Presentation (1 hr, 20 mins)
The presentations are divided into sections with a review quiz to help assess how much information you have retained. On completion of each quiz the answers can be reviewed together with the correct responses.
- CPD certification quiz
The certification quiz contains all the questions in the same order as given in the presentation but you have only one attempt at each. The pass mark is 70%; if you have completed and reviewed the presentation thoroughly you should score 100%! If you score less than 70% make a note of the questions answered incorrectly then review the relevant parts of the presentation and repeat the quiz.
