Learning Aim
The aim of this seminar is to consider current evidence of the systemic effects of inflammatory periodontitis on some of the body’s major systems.

Learning Objectives
During this webinar participants will:
- Explore briefly the history of the belief that the oral cavity was the cause of most systemic illness
- Consider the prevalence of periodontitis
- Explore the current body of evidence and plausible mechanisms supporting a link (association or causation) between plaque-induced inflammatory periodontal disease (periodontitis) and the cardiovascular system, diabetes, adverse pregnancy outcomes and cancer
- Examine any prospective intervention studies that assess the impact of successful periodontal therapy on systemic disease outcomes
- Develop an awareness of the issue of clinical negligence misstatement
Learning Outcome
By the end of this session participants will have be aware of the effects of periodontitis on some of the body's major systems.
About the Presenter
Juliana Henking is a graduate of the Queen’s University of Belfast. Since qualifying as a dentist, she has held jobs in the Hospital, General and, Salaried Dental Services (formerly the Community Dental Services) and served as an officer in the Royal Army Dental Corps.
She has also worked as a Clinical Demonstrator in Periodontology at both GKT and Belfast Dental Schools, and was the first Deputy Director of the Belfast School of Dental Hygiene.
Juliana now practices as a Specialist in Periodontics, and is also the Retaining and Returning Adviser for Dentists in the Department of Postgraduate Dentistry, London Deanery.Currently, she combines her clinical work in Periodontics with a keen interest in Medical Law and Ethics.
She gained an MA in Medical Ethics and Law from King’s College in 2003 and this year was awarded an LLM in Claims and Risk Management in Healthcare (with commendation). She has also trained as an Expert Witness with the charity Action against Medical Accidents (AvMA).

Yes, you can submit questions to the presenter anytime before or during the webinar by email or by using the chat window. Questions will be addressed during the question and answer session.
