Learning Aim
To provide an update of the knowledge and skills necessary when administering conscious sedation techniques in primary care dental settings.
Learning Objectives
During this session participants will be provided information on the following subject areas:
- The medico-legal and training requirements necessary to practice conscious sedation techniques
- The scope of available sedation techniques, their indications and contra-indications, advantages and disadvantages
- The equipment necessary to carry out conscious sedation techniques
- The requirements for patient assessment and appropriate allocation of a variety of sedation techniques
- The pre-treatment, treatment and post-operative requirements of conscious sedation techniques.
- The technical elements of conscious sedation practice
- Basic and advanced techniques and new developments

Learning Outcome
By the end of this session participants will have knowledge of the above-subject areas in relation to the skills relating to the administration of sedation in primary care dentistry.
About the Presenter
Chris Dickinson currently works as a consultant in the Department of Sedation and Special Care Dentistry at The KCL Dental Institute at Guy’s Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital. After time in general practice and the community dental service he moved to full time hospital practice in 2001. He is on the specialist lists for Prosthodontics and Special Care Dentistry.
Chris’ treatment interests lie in all areas of Sedation and Special Care Dentistry with special interests in oral health care for patients with Epidermolysis Bullosa, patients with severe medical conditions and those with gagging problems.
Chris is heavily involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and examining in both sedation and special care dentistry at KCL where he organises the year 5 undergraduate sedation course. He is also a presiding examiner for the NEBDN dental sedation nursing post-certification exam and sits on the DSN, DSTG and BSDH committees.
Chris teaches sedation, special care, infection control, BLS and medical emergencies in dentistry for ORE, MJDF, KCL MSc’s and other postgraduate groups and is involved in teaching with the distance learning MClinDent in prosthodontics at KCL.
