Autumn 2019

Autumn 2019

We have spent much of the summer break working on important enhancements to key areas of the website that will be rolled out over the autumn. Look out for webinars demonstrating the updated CPD, community and support features in action as part of the free course Making the Most of The Dental Channel. If you are already enrolled you will be notified automatically, if not now is a good time to do so!

Our Evening Expert programme for the rest of the year features the GDC recommended topics disinfection and decontamination, oral cancer: early detection and prevention, materials and equipment (technicians can substitute this for radiology and radiation protection) and safeguarding children and young people. We commence on Wednesday 4 September when Dr Caroline Pankhurst, specialist in oral microbiology, discusses the drivers for change in infection control since we launched way back in the last century (November 1988 if you didn't already know!). Learning from history helps develop essential preventive and risk management strategies. Caroline has delivered numerous presentations in this GDC highly recommended subject area for us that are always highly rated, to which this event will be the ideal complement.

On Wednesday 2 October Professor Saman Warnakulasuriya, internationally renowned expert in oral cancer, will be providing us with the current state of knowledge in this field. Saman last presented in 2015, and as always it will be a pleasure to have him back.

On Wednesday 6 November Dr James Wise will be discussing digital printing, which means that we are covering digital technologies for our 21st birthday, a highly appropriate subject! James is qualified as both dental technician and dentist, as well as one of our longest established subject matter experts. This presentation will be of particular interest not only to dentists but also dental and clinical dental technicians.

On Wednesday 4 December Dr Monika Ivanova, consultant in paediatric dentistry and my colleague at King's, will be sharing some case examples in safeguarding (safeguarding children and young people). We last covered this important subject over four years ago. The format was well received with requests for more, so are delighted that Monika has agreed.

Now that the evenings will be drawing in, I look forward to welcoming members to our live webinars whether as part of our Evening Expert or our open-to-all Making the Most programmes. Enjoy the presentations and join in the discussions. We all learn together.
