Michael qualified as a Dental Hygienist in 1978 spending his early career in the Royal Air Force. In 1997 he started his NHS career with Somerset Health Authority as oral health promotion co-ordinator, then undertaking the project management role of developing a traditional CDS to a full PDS contact including the provision of not only special care dentistry but urgent and specialist care. With the move to Primary Care Trusts carrying out dental commissioning for the then new contact in 2006, he became dental development manager for the Somerset PCT`s, as well as the project manager for outreach dental training for Birmingham and Bristol dental hospitals and schools.
In 2008 Michael was appointed Dental Services Manager for the both University Hospitals Bristol and the University of Bristol, this role encompassed both the management of the dental hospital and school in Bristol and the oversight of the Special Care Dental Service across Avon.
More recently Michael was the training and development lead for mouth care matters in care homes across Kent, Surrey and Sussex as well as undertaking the dental workforce advisory role for the centre for workforce intelligence, continuing in this role when the workforce role moved to a HEE function. Currently this role involves programme management for all dental apprenticeships. In addition, he is also dental workforce transformation tutor for HEE South West and works in general dental practice.
He is a past president of BDHA, was inaugural president of BSDHT and is a past trustee for the oral health foundation. He is an expert advisor to NICE for all oral health guidelines and an external expert to OFQUAL and a Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Kent.
